Field notes
Canyons, coastlines, and the quiet discipline of paying attention outdoors.
Home / About us
A tiny team with a big reading list. We write about the outdoors that restores us and the web work that sustains us.
Hazelwren Notes began in 2019 as a shared document between two studio friends: one who hiked every weekend, one who never closed their laptop. We traded essays on trails and type scales until the document became a habit, and the habit became this journal.
Today we publish one considered story a week — half about slow, deliberate living, half about building an honest web. No hot takes, no growth hacks, no filler. If a piece does not earn its place on your Sunday morning, it does not ship.
Every story passes through three desks: a draft written longhand or in plain text, a critique around a real table with coffee going cold, and a final read-aloud before it meets the page. It takes longer. It reads better.
We keep our footprint small — a rented studio room, secondhand furniture, one good camera between us — and our standards high. When we recommend a tool, a journal, or a trail, we have used it, read it, or walked it.
Canyons, coastlines, and the quiet discipline of paying attention outdoors.
How the work actually gets made — briefs, drafts, dead ends, and launches.
Standards, performance, and interfaces that respect their readers.
Journals, newsletters, and the business of staying small on purpose.
